Uber skips street-hailing and telephone dispatchers, stripping away meter uncertainty before you ever open a car door. Entering a destination shows your total price and calculated arrival time before booking, which keeps short errands and long city trips predictable.
Vehicle options vary by location and headcount. Standard options like UberX and group-oriented UberXL handle basic commutes, while Comfort, Black, and Premier provide newer vehicles, extra legroom, or professional drivers. The platform also integrates local taxis, electric vehicles, scooters, hourly hires, and large-capacity charter buses seating up to 55 passengers. If you prefer to drive, hourly car borrowing and home-delivered rental vehicles are available in select cities.
Beyond passenger travel, the app handles parcel routing and food orders. Uber Connect moves local packages same-day, while food, grocery, and pharmacy orders route through Uber Eats within the same service ecosystem. In-app safety tools include VoIP calling between drivers and riders without exposing phone numbers.
It is not a complete replacement for every transit need. Smaller towns may have zero driver availability, and specialized options like child seats or car rentals remain restricted to specific metro areas. The app also requests heavy permissions, including precise GPS location, contacts, camera, and microphone access.

Common questions
Can I split the fare with friends on Uber?
Yes. The app includes a Split Fare feature that lets you divide the total trip cost evenly with other riders during the trip. You can also use Group Rides or UberX Share to travel together.
Can I rent a car through the Uber app?
Yes. Uber offers Uber Carshare for hourly or daily vehicle borrowing, as well as rental car bookings with home delivery via Valet in select cities.
What is Uber One?
Uber One is a subscription program offering zero dollar delivery fees, up to 10 percent off eligible delivery orders, and 6 percent Uber Cash back on eligible rides.
Does Uber work for large groups?
For groups up to six, you can select UberXL. For much larger groups, Uber Charter allows booking limo buses and coach buses seating 14 to 55 passengers.
